COVID-19 is changing everyone globally and most people are not even aware of it.
Dr. Amy Vigliotti stated, “With increasing concern about the coronavirus, we have seen and will continue to see a variety of responses. While everyone experiences anxiety a little differently, the common thread is the feeling of threat to ourselves and/or the ones we love, coupled with a general feeling of uncertainty about what is to come. Some individuals are being heavily impacted by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, trouble sleeping, and changes in appetite. Others may find cognitive symptoms to be a greater stressor resulting in difficulties recalling memories, problems with concentration, inability to control negative thoughts, ruminating on the same thoughts, and having trouble seeing any positives.”
The PhD made her statement back on March 19, 2020 a few days after the spread of COVID had just begun. Today the situation is exponentially worse. With nearly 13 million total cases in the USA and over ¼ of million people dead, this is quickly becoming the single greatest crisis in our country’s history.
UNICEF stated, “COVID-19 has turned the world upside down. Everything has been impacted; how we live and interact with each other; how we work and communicate; how we move around and travel. Every aspect of our lives has been affected. Decisions made now and in the coming months will be some of the most important made in generations.”
So we offer these words of wisdom right now. Stay calm, connected (virtually), show love, and be slow to react harshly. Love, peace, and sound decisions need to guide us as we move forward right now. We didn’t need a crystal ball to forecast that the COVID-19 pandemic would devastate mental health. Illness or fear of illness, social isolation, economic insecurity, disruption of routine, and loss of loved ones have known risk factors for depression and anxiety. Now studies have confirmed the “predictions” as mentioned in Scientific America.
Detroit needs calmness, human connection, love and Peaceful Hugs. Much of this must be achieved virtually since we cannot be in direct contact with people right now. We have to decide to do things differently and react more calmly. If not, COVID-19 will control everything. Our human design requires us to be connected with other humans. However, the quarantining is separating us from people and this is having devastating consequences.
Zoom meetings, email, and social media are a few ways we can stay connected and yet maintain distance. Hang in there everyone, we are far more resilient than most of us think we are. We can make it as long as we are treating each other with love, respect, and kindness.
